Blog 2. Exploring Music Video.

Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tijW_SrCoxs

The genre of Boulevard of Broken dreams is Pop Rock, the genre is pop rock because it has rock instruments which has a pop melody to the lyrics and instrumental. From the very start of the video it is made to look like old footage so that we get a feel that it is damaged, this gives the video a darker and more depressing feel as it is a rock band. The video shows the band walking through a desert alone, this gives the audience straight away the impression that they are completely alone in the world. This Song is most popular with females aged 13-17 and males from 13-24. By having a pop type of melody with rock instruments this can appeal to a wider audience.

California Girlz by Katy Perry.

You can tell that this video is in the pop genre because of the beat and by the set in the video. It is colourful and upbeat, which would appeal to quite a wide audience. We know that this song appeals to females aged 13-17 becuase of the pop beat and the idea of the video is very imaginative and outrageous. It also appeals to males aged 35-54, which is a completely different age group altogether and considering the colourful, 'girly' set is strange. Although there are other things in the video which are very likely that males would like to watch it for, such as the promiscuous dancing and costumes. All of these things are completely different to the first video 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' by Greenday because the beat is happier and faster showing us that it is pop compared to pop rock and the way it is set such as colour, lighting and costumes are a lot brighter and show happiness and not lonliness.

'Love the way you lie ft. Rihanna' by Eminem.

Both Rihanna and Eminem have solo parts in this video and because they are both very popular artists they both equally have their own parts in the video. This is done a lot in music videos because having two different popular artists will appeal to a wider audience with different music tastes. Part of the song could be put in the pop category (the part done by Rihanna) because of the beat and lyrics and the other part of the song done by Eminem could be put in the rap/hip hop category again because of the lyrics and beat. The two parts of the song work really well together and it has been a great success as a song. There is a story line in the video about what both artists are singing about probably from both the females side of the story and the males side of the story. By doing this the audience can visually see what the singers are singing about and gives them a better understanding about what is going on. Compared to the Katy Perry video 'California Girlz' this is much more serious, which you can tell by the lighting and colours used in the video. In the 'California Girlz' video it is very bright and colourful, whereas this video uses silhouettes and dark lighting, which shows to the audience that it is sad and about serious matters. We are taken through the story of this couples life at that particular moments, which involves the audience more and all of the things that are happening in the scene are to do with what the two artists are singing about. This song appeals to females aged 13-24 and males aged 18-24, this shows that it only appeals to younger people perhaps one of the reasons could be becuase young people can relate to the music video better than older people. Compared to the first and second music videos we can see that it is much more serious than the second video and is similar to the first video in this sense, but this video is looking at love from a completely different angle which shows through in the video.

'Candyman' by Christina Aguilera.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nu-7rPdFjvI&ob=av2e

Right from the very beginning of this music video you can see that it is set in the past just by looking at the costumes, set and make up. It also has a pop beat and goes straight into the song, involving the audience right from the beginning. The colours are bright again but there is a slightly older look to it going back to it being set in the past. There is no real story line to it from what she is singing to what the music video is about, we can see at the beginning that she is performing on stage for sailers, which shows that the lyrics don't relate very much to what is happening in the video. This video appeals to males 45-54, which makes sense as the time the video is supposed to be set is when this age group would have been teenagers and they are male because the dancing and costumes are quite sexual and would appeal to the male audience in that way. This also appeals to females of the ages of 13-24, the reasons for this might be because it is colourful and upbeat and Christina Augilera is very popular and could be seen as an icon to this age group, it also shows a lot of fashion that girls of this age could like. She is seen in the video with three different colour hair and again this could appeal to all hair types, such as blonde, brunette and red head's. This video is very different to the other video's because it is obviously set in a different time period and there is no real story line to go with the lyrics.
