It was very important that our group wrote a letter of permission to Atlantic Records to ask if we could use this song because it is under copyright laws.
If we hadn't asked for permission we could have been subjected to the servere consequences that you can face if you infringe copyright laws.
There are many reasons why the music industry use copyright. One is because an artist may create a song that becomes very popular and makes millions of pounds, if this song is not copyrighted then anyone in the world can use it to either create another version of it or use it and create money for themsleves with it. This would be bad for the artist that made the song because they are the people that have spent time and money on that song, they would need to create of a profit from it by sales, they wouldnt be able to do this properly if other people we copying it.
The music industry can make a lot of money from charging people that want to use the song, in an advert for example. If it is a well known song lot's of people want to use it especially on TV because people take notice of the advert if it is a song that is popular and well known it draws attention, this allows the music industry to charge lot's of money to many different people for the use of the song.
Another reason is because copyright can last for years and years on one song and if it is very popluar the artists can earn a constant stream of money up until the artists death some times. One example of this is 'Thriller' by Michael Jackson, this was one of the best selling songs of all time and he earned money from that song up until he died. Even after he had died when more people bought his music his family or friends could still earn money from this music.
